I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE HAS EVER HAD SO MANY "V'S" IN THERE.

What would convince people to read Carl Deuker's books? Anything huge? GOOD WORD OF MOUTH IS MY BEST AGENT. TELL YOUR FRIENDS IF YOU LIKE THEM.

hey i realy loved ur book and hope u make another please do i couldnt stop reading it IT'S BETTER THAN TWILIGHT i mean it :) i love ur book and hope evey body else deose HAVE FUN AND WRITE MORE BOOKS
THANKS, THAT'S PRETTY HIGH PRAISE. I WISH MY BOOKS SOLD AS WELL AS TWILIGHT!!!

why did the fat guy kill himself THAT'S A BIT MYSTERIOUS. MAYBE THE TERRORISTS WERE ON TO HIM; MAYBE HE WAS MURDERED BY THEM, AND IT WAS MADE TO LOOK LIKE SUICIDE; MAYBE HE FELT GUILTY ABOUT WHAT HE WAS DOING. CHANCE NEVER FINDS OUT, SO THERE'S NOW WAY TO KNOW.

u should make a nother runner MY NEW BOOK (PAYBACK TIME) IS A MYSTERY THRILLER IN THE SAME STYLE.

what are four rising actions of on the devil's court???
MOVES TO NEW TOWN; GETS DRUNK AT PARTY; SELLS SOUL????; FATHER HAS HEART ATTACK

the protagonist and antagonist of the book heart of a champion I NEVER REALLY UNDERSTOOD THAT PROTAGONIST/ANTAGONIST STUFF. GOOD LUCK

Mr. Deuker
I absouletly love the books High Heat and Heart of a Champion. They are the best books i ever read. i just finished them both and it took me a week, im not much of a reader but when i started reading i couldnt stop. i took them everywhere. I play baseball is probably why i love them so much. Please continue to write books about sports and about baseball. I appreicate you taking the time to read my comment.
Karson I'VE GOT ONE MORE 'BASEBALL' BOOK OUT THERE FOR YOU--PAINTING THE BLACK. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THEM, AND THANKS FOR WRITING.

I posted the one about the soundtrack songs, and it is school related, so im sorry, but i didnt read the top THAT'S OKAY. THE QUESTIONS I DON'T LIKE ARE: COMPARE THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE BOOK. HOW ARE THEY ALIKE? HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? THE MUSIC QUESTION IS A LITTLE OFF THE WALL, AND IT WAS FUN TO ANSWER. (I WORK FROM THE BOTTOM UP ON THESE."

If you were to make a soundtrack of your book the runner, what 3 songs would you choose that would fit the theme and storyline of the book?? WOW, THAT'S A DIFFERENT QUESTION. WELL, "TINY DANCER" BY ELTON JOHN WOULD HAVE TO BE ONE SONG; THEN "COMES A TIME" BY NEIL YOUNG; AND LAST "MOONLIGHT MILE" BY THE ROLLING STONES. I KNOW, OLD ROCK 'N' ROLL, BUT I'M AN OLD GUY.

Hi, my name is Joe and im doing a book report on your book heart of a champion. I need a quote from you and i can't seem to find any. so would you mind telling me where i can find some? WELL, EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK IS A QUOTE FROM ME, SO JUST PICK OUT SOME SENTENCE THAT YOU LIKE, THEN GO FROM THERE. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THAT IDEA, GET A HOLD OF "ON THE DEVIL'S COURT." IN THE LAST 10 PAGES OR SO, JOE FAUST SEES MOONLIGHT AND SAYS SOMETHING LIKE "STRANGE, WONDERFUL THINGS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME." THAT'S A QUOTE THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE LIKED AND HAVE USED. I DON'T HAVE THE BOOK WITH ME NOW, OR I'D GET IT RIGHT FOR YOU.

my name is ivan and i love your books especially gym candy haow did you come up with it THE IDEA CAME FROM THE NEWS. PRO ATHLETES, AND THEN A STORY ABOUT A HIGH SCHOOL PITCHER WHO KILLED HIMSELF. HIS PARENTS FOUND STEROIDS IN HIS ROOM AND THOUGHT THE STEROIDS WERE AT LEAST PARTLY TO BLAME.

I now what you mean by not writing a sequel 4 gym candy. But maybe if i gave you a pretty good idea you could see if you like it.I prob. no what your thinkin that your the author and you will come up with the ideas but its just a consideration. So if its ok with you send me something back .......THANKSS
I GOT THE IDEA FOR ON THE DEVIL'S COURT FROM SOMEONE ELSE, SO I'M PERFECTLY OKAY WITH USING OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS. POST IT HERE SO OTHER PEOPLE CAN READ IT TOO.

Mr. Deuker if you wouldnt mind answering my question; Will you write another gym candy. How did come up with the story of the book gym candy. There is a bunch of your fans that love this book. You should feel good about it.So what inspired you to write this story THE IDEA CAME FROM THE NEWS. PRO ATHLETES, AND THEN A STORY ABOUT A HIGH SCHOOL PITCHER WHO KILLED HIMSELF. HIS PARENTS FOUND STEROIDS IN HIS ROOM AND THOUGHT THE STEROIDS WERE AT LEAST PARTLY TO BLAME. I WROTE ANOTHER "FOOTBALL" BOOK, BUT STEROIDS AREN'T IN THIS ONE. I LIKE TO MOVE ON TO NEW TOPICS.

Hey I love your story runner I didn't want to put it down.... I was wondering if you had any tips for me I like writing stories but once I get to a certain point I don't know what else to add HAPPENS TO ME TOO. MY TIP WOULD BE NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. THINK OF ALL THAT WRITING AS PRACTICE. THE MORE YOU DO, THE BETTER YOU GET AT IT. FORCING YOURSELF TO FINISH IS A MISTAKE. YOU'LL JUST COME UP WITH SOME ENDING YOU DON'T LIKE AND THEN YOU'LL HATE YOUR WHOLE STORY. PUT IT ASIDE, START SOMETHING NEW, AND THEN MAYBE A GOOD ENDING WILL COME LATER ON.

Mr deuker. I'm your biggest fans And I was woundering how would you describe chance in runner and how this story relates to you. CHANCE IS PULLED IN MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. TO GIVE ONE EXAMPLE. HE IS, SOMETIMES, PROUD OF HIS FATHER; HE IS, SOMETIMES, ASHAMED OF HIS FATHER. I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THEIR TEENS AND OLDER HAVE SIMILAR CONFUSING FEELINGS ABOUT PARENTS/SCHOOL/WORK/THEIR FUTURE.

what was the main conflict in your book the runner
POVERTY PULLS CHANCE IN ONE DIRECTION; HIS GENERAL SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG PULLS HIM IN THE OTHER.

Mr.Deuker if you do not mind answering my question, I would like to ask you if you were mentored by anyone?
I DON'T MIND AT ALL. THE ANSWER WOULD BE NO.

right another gym candyyyy GLAD YOU LIKED IT. PAYBACK TIME IS A FOOTBALL BOOK, BUT IT HAS NEW CHARACTERS. IT COMES OUT IN SEPTEMBER

You need to right a another gym candy. That was a amazing book. So please try to right another 1 like it please . A life changing book THANK YOU.

will you write a gym candy 2 MAYBE SOMEDAY

what was the setting in the gym in the book gym candy
THIS QUESTION CONFUSES ME. THEY LIFTED WEIGHTS IN THE WEIGHT ROOM BY THE GYM, BUT IT'S A FOOTBALL BOOK.

What is Mick's mom's name in Gym Candy? I DON'T REMEMBER OFFHAND.

can a ten-year-old become an author???!!!??? IF YOU WRITE, YOU ARE AN AUTHOR. THERE ARE CONTESTS FOR 10 YEAR OLDS AS WELL. S.E. HINTON WAS UNDER 20 WHEN SHE WROTE THE OUTSIDERS. THE YOUNG MAN WHO WROTE ERAGON WAS VERY YOUNG AS WELL. SO AGE DOESN'T MATTER.

ive noticed a bunch of ppl as myself would like to read another gym candy haha ... Why not make in drews point of veiw. Or maybe even his dads. like how he wishes mick dont his same mistakes that would be awesome plz consider it thanks
plz email i would like to hear from yu . yu r by far my favorite author .
I CERTAINLY WILL CONSIDER IT. I KNOW EVERYBODY LIKES SEQUELS; I JUST DON'T WANT TO SPOIL A GOOD BOOK BY WRITING A CRUMMY SEQUEL
where did carl deuker go to school CAL-BERKELEY, UCLA, AND U. OF WASHINGTON WERE MY COLLEGES.

What suject do you teach? TEACH 6TH GRADE NOW, SO I TEACH EVERYTHING.

Hi i was wondering what three topics do u mostly wright about? SPORTS, GROWING UP, PEER PRESSURE
and also what three things make u a great wrighter....
I'M A GOOD WRITER, NOT A GREAT ONE. QUALITIES: GOOD IMAGINATION, WILLINGNESS TO REWRITE/ERASE, PERSEVERANCE
What are 4 wrighting styles yuo have can u please wright me at yassin24@live.com I DON'T HAVE FOUR WRITING STYLES. I TRY FOR WHAT I'D CALL THE "PLAIN" STYLE. I'D LIKE YOU NOT TO THINK OF ME ONCE WHILE YOU'RE READING THE BOOK, BUT TO THINK ONLY OF THE CHARACTERS. MY GOAL IS FOR THE BOOK TO SEE AS IF IT HAD NO AUTHOR.

Starters I wanted to say that I Loved your book RUNNER I think it was awesome! I love the beginning when it talks about him being in ways poor and that he feels like he is different from them because of the money situation. Very nicely put. But I did not like the ending to it. It mad me mad that it did not have a happy ending. The mother did not even comeback to consult her child that just lost his father. He doesn’t even know what he is going to do with his life he just lost the only thing he had as family, very sad. I wanted to let you know that because I really did get into the book. Once again it was a very, very good book. THANK YOU. YES, IT HAS SAD ELEMENTS AT THE END, BUT I'D SUGGEST THAT HIS FATHER REDEEMED HIMSELF WITH HIS COURAGEOUS ACT THAT SAVED MANY PEOPLE, AND SO THAT'S NOT ALL SAD. I'D ALSO SAY THAT CHANCE HAS LEARNED A LOT AND IS READY TO BUILD HIS OWN LIFE. SO, SOMEWHAT SAD, BUT NOT ENTIRELY.

is payback time the sequel to gym candy NO. NEW CHARACTERS, BUT IT IS FOOTBALL.

did you ever consider making one of your books into a movie? THAT'S NOT UP TO AUTHORS, THAT'S UP TO FILMMAKERS.

Hi Mr.Deuker

you are my favorite author, i have read most of your books.
I just wanted to tell you that you are a great author and to keep writing! Your books never dissapoint me. :)

THANK YOU!
I loved reading your books specifically night hoops, gym candy, and high heat. I was wondeing if you were planning on righting any sequels because iwould love to see what happened to characters. MY MOST COMMON QUESTION--MAYBE SOMEDAY.

When is someone going to make one of your movies like Gym Candy or High Heat into a movie?
And what is your next book about i cant really tell from the first chapters you posted. FOOTBALL MYSTERY. NEW GUY SHOWS UP AT SCHOOL, ALMOST TOO TALENTED, WHO CLAIMS HE HASN'T PLAYED BEFORE. WHAT'S HE HIDING?

I'm a 7th grader and I just read the book gym candy. I really loved this book. I'm a quarterback for my middle school team and strive to Be the best on the feild being the best hitter, fastest runner, ect. I can realate to Mick alot, I don't really get pushed by anyone else, but mainly myself. I really enjoyed his book even though, like most middle school athletes I hate to read, but I just couldn't put it Down. I reall hope that you make a sequal to gym candy. But what I was wondering is what really inspired you to write a book like this? Is it past experiances?
JUST ALL THE STUFF IN THE NEWSPAPERS ABOUT STEROIDS, AND THEN HEARING THE STORY OF A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE AT LEAST PARTIALLY BECAUSE OF STEROID USE.
Can i have a free copy of payback time SORRY, AUTHORS HAVE TO BUY BOOKS TOO. HERE'S A WAY TO GET IT FREE, THOUGH. ASK YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARIAN OR YOUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARIAN TO BUY THE BOOK FOR THEIR LIBRARY. ALSO ASK IF YOU CAN BE THE FIRST TO READ IT. USUALLY LIBRARIANS ARE HAPPY TO ACCOMMODATE ANXIOUS READERS.

this is spencer agian sorry please message me at lillover699@yahoo.com with the awenser please thanks :)

hi Mr.Deuker im a big fan of your book runner great book im in part three right now.
any ways im doind a project for school for my english class and i chose to do an interview on you if you dont mind if however you do mind i can also do a report on your book itself but i thought getting info from you personaly i have seen this page before so i thought i would try again if you do allow ?'s then please awenser back thanks

Spencer, Johnston Meadville PA.

Mr. Deuker,
Your books are amazing. I have read runner and gym candy for school and they have been the best two books I have ever read. I am not a big reader and i couldn't put them down. Please make a sequel to both of these!! Thanks OH, SEQUELS--MAYBE SOME DAY I'LL DO JUST THAT.

Mr. Deuker I have noticed that in most of your books that the main character is always an "average joe" kind of guy that had to work very hard to achieve his goals. I just wondered with you being a teacher if the message you are trying to emphasize is hard work pays off? I may be reading to much into it, but I was just wondering? NO, YOU'RE NOT READING TOO MUCH INTO IT. AND I DON'T THINK IT HAS A WHOLE LOT TO DO WITH ME BEING A TEACHER. I WENT TO A DANCE PERFORMANCE AT UW TODAY AND IN THE Q & A AFTERWARDS, THE DANCER SAID: "PRACTICE AND HARD WORK--THAT'S THE KEY." I BELIEVE MICHAEL JORDAN ONCE SAID THAT GROWING UP HE PLAYED AGAINST KIDS ON THE PLAYGROUND WHO WERE MORE TALENTED THAN HE WAS.

hello, my 4th grade son & 3 of his classmates are reading Heart of a Champion. I am concerned that some of the subject matter is inappropriate for 4th graders. He has told me the book uses the word "bitch" and also talks about a person who smokes, drinks alcohol & looks at magaizines of naked women while in bed. What age is recommended for reading this book? FOURTH GRADE SEEMS A LITTLE YOUNG TO ME. I THINK YOUR SON IS LIKELY TO READ RIGHT OVER MATERIAL THAT'S NOT SUITED TO HIS AGE AND FOCUS ON THE BASEBALL. MY CONCERN IS THAT WHEN HE IS OLDER, AND THE REAL THEMES OF THE BOOK WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT, HE'LL TURN TO YOU AND SAY: "BUT I ALREADY READ THAT." BUT, ALL IN ALL, I'D SAY LET HIM READ IT NOW AND JUST HOPE THAT HE READS IT AGAIN WHEN IT MIGHT BE MORE MEANINGFUL. (AS FAR AS THE LANGUAGE GOES, IT'S VERY TAME. TV IS FAR MORE LURID.)

r u goin to write another book to gym candy? please do so I MIGHT SOMEDAY

Dear Mr. Deuker,

I am enthusiastic reader of your books. I noticed that you have a new one coming out soon. Do you know the actual publication date for it?

Sincerely,

Student
Airport High School
West Columbia, SC
I DON'T KNOW THE EXACT DATE. I THINK MAY, BUT OFTEN AUTHORS FIND OUT LATE ABOUT SUCH THINGS. AMAZON.COM WILL BE THE FIRST TO KNOW.

Dear Mr. Deuker,

I read Heart of a Champion a few weeks ago and I wanted to clarify what that boys intentions were, i forget his name, when he lured Seth and Jimmy to his shack and tried to give them beer and showed them his dirty magazines. I assumed molestation, but I could just be assuming the worst. Thanks, it has been bugging me since I read it. I THINK "GROOMING" IS THE PROPER WORD--SETTING UP THEM FOR LATER.

Dear Mr. Deuker,

I never really liked sports that much until I started reading your work. Now, I attend as many basketball games as I can. I finished Runner today and I think it might be my favorite book you’ve written. When I checked it out, I thought it was about track, since your books usually have to do with sports, but I wasn’t disappointed with its plot. I could really relate to Chance by the end of the novel as I too hold some guilt over my own fathers death, though his was a suicide. I know you mostly write about basketball and football, but I was just wondering if you have ever considered writing a book about soccer. I am really looking forward to Payback Time, and hope it’s as good as all of your other books. Good luck on your future work! THANKS FOR WRITING. IT'S HARD NOT HAVING A FATHER, AS WE BOTH KNOW. I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT SOCCER. MY MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT I NEVER PLAYED THE GAME, SO I'M AFRAID OF MAKING SOME STUPID ERRORS IN THE DESCRIPTIONS WHICH WILL MAKE REAL SOCCER PLAYERS GROAN. I HAVE TO STUDY THE GAME MORE.

what is ross's last name in on the devils court
I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER. I'M NOT SURE HE HAS A LAST NAME IN THE BOOK.

what high school did mick go to in Gym Candy. THE SCHOOL IS MODELED ON BALLARD HIGH SCHOOL IN SEATTLE, BUT I DON'T AT THIS MOMENT REMEMBER WHAT I CALLED IT.

what is seth's stats. I WROTE THAT BOOK A LONG TIME AGO, BUT IF MEMORY SERVES ME, HE WAS ABOUT A .270 HITTER WITHOUT MUCH POP. GOOD ON-BASE PERCENTAGE BECAUSE HE WAS PATIENT AT THE PLATE. EXCELLENT FIELDER.

Dear mr deuker
Im reading ur book Gym Candy (great book) what motivated to become a writer??? I LIKED THE MUSIC OF THE ROLLING STONES, BEATLES, BOB DYLAN. STARTED WRITING SONGS, DISCOVERED I HAD NO TALENT AT THAT, SO SWITCHED TO STORIES.

hi

Please write a sequel to gym candy! I loved that book, and I would love to know that he does not take anymore steroids. Does Mike play in college, does he even continue his high school career? What happens to his friendship with Drew? These are things i would like to find out I MAY WRITE ONE SOMEDAY. I NEED TO HAVE ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS FIRST. PAYBACK TIME COMES OUT IN A FEW MONTHS--GIVE THAT A TRY.

how many books have u wrote PAYBACK TIME WILL BE MY 8TH BOOK.

I cant wait until your new book comes out, any way to pre-order? IN A FEW MONTHS, I THINK AMAZON WILL HAVE A PREORDER POSSIBILITY. THANKS FOR BEING SUCH A DEVOTED READER.

Mr.Deuker
im not much of a reader but when i picked up GYM CANDY for the first time i was instintly hooked. i am a high school football player and i kno the temtations that come when your in the gym. when i read your book i felt like i was in the story (if that makes any sense). i would just like to ask you to please consider making more and more football books.
thank you, your fan #90 THANKS. MY NEXT BOOK IS ALSO A "FOOTBALL" BOOK, THOUGH LIKE GYM CANDY I HOPE IT IS ABOUT MORE THAN FOOTBALL.

i need a good website that can give me literary criticisms on your book night hoops SOMETIMES LIBRARIES HAVE REVIEWS AS PART OF THEIR WEBSITE. THE ONLY OTHER PLACE I CAN THINK OF IS AMAZON.COM

Dear Mr. Deuker.
Gym Candy was my favortie book. When I finished, I had expected there would be a sequal. I checked in my schools library, but there wasn't. So, I looked it up and didn't find a sequal. I decided to come to this website to ask for one. I didn't expect Mick to end up in rehab alone and sad. What about his football career? He can play for his jr. year, but thats all I know. I really want to read more books by you but my favortie sport is football. I really want a sequal. Are you ever going to write one? I MAY SOMEDAY WRITE A SEQUEL TO GYM CANDY. BASICALLY, THOUGH, WHEN I'M DONE WITH A BOOK I LIKE TO MOVE ON TO A NEW PROJECT.

What happens to Peter in Gym Candy? PETER WOULD BE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH SELLING DRUGS. PROBABLY GET A SHORT JAIL TERM OR PROBATION.

Dear Mr.Dueker,
I wanted to say that the book Gym Candy was the best book I have read. It made me think that if you can not get big muscles by weights, why try steroids, because you already know that they are illegal for sports use. Thank for making that book! GLAD YOU LIKED IT

Hey which state did the book take place? I'M ASSUMING YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT GYM CANDY. WASHINGTON--MAINLY IN SEATTLE. ALL MY BOOKS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HEART OF A CHAMPION, ARE SET IN WASHINGTON STATE. HEART OF CHAMPION IS SET IN CALIFORNIA.

Dear:Mr Deuker
I read the book Gym candy and i thought it was one of the best books I have ever read. I had one question is gym candy a real story based on a true person? IT'S A COMPLILATION OF STUFF I READ IN THE NEWSPAPER AND THINGS I MADE UP.

Mr.Deuker
Why are so many of your books based on or have something to do with sports. THE FIRST BOOK THAT I GOT PUBLISHED WAS A "SPORTS" BOOK. IT DID WELL, AND SO I'VE JUST CONTINUED TO WRITE SPORTS BOOKS. RUNNER IS MORE OF A MYSTERY THAN A SPORTS BOOK, AND SO IS PAYBACK TIME. BUT WHEN YOU SUCCEED AT SOMETHING, AND YOU ENJOY IT, THERE'S NOT MUCH REASON TO SWITCH.

Dear Mr. Dueker
MY name is Robert Christensen, Im 16 and i believe myself to be the biggest baseball fan in the world. I read Heart of a Champion and i strongly connected with that whole situation. I have teammates that make stupid decisions like Jimmy Winters. I plan on making it to the Biggs aa a pitcher and striking out every dang Yankee in the lineup every time i start against them. I really appreciate what you do and how you are able to connect to baseball junkies like me. I think about that book nearly every day, and how Jimmy was a leader, and that inspires me to lead my team. Again I strongly appreciate all the sports books you write (especially baseball). You should join my fantasy league for 2010. snipaville@gmail.com Go Mariners! Go Ichiro! I'LL BE LOOKING FOR YOUR NAME IN THE PAPERS, ROOTING FOR YOU TO STRIKE OUT EVERY ONE OF THOSE DAMN YANKEES. AND YOU CAN STRIKE OUT EVERY DAMN DODGER TOO, FOR ME. BEST OF LUCK.

hey y dont u try and make a movie of runner it would be really good I'D LOVE IT IF A MOVIEMAKER WOULD DO JUST THAT, BUT IT'S NOT UP TO AUTHORS TO DECIDE WHICH STORIES GET TURNED INTO MOVIES.

Do you have like a study guide to "on the devil's court"? I'm doing a report in school and I have read your book and it is an exciting thrill ride. If you could e-mail me at traviscardinal@ymail.com it would greatly be appreciated thankyou very much. I DON'T HAVE A STUDY GUIDE. THAT'S A GOAL FOR THIS SUMMER.

what were some inspirations you had that made you start writing?? I LOVED TO READ AND I LOVED BOB DYLAN AND THE BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES.

do you have any words to describe your book "gym candy"
I AM NOT QUITE SURE WHAT YOU'RE ASKING, BUT HOW ABOUT SPORTS THRILLER ABOUT THE PRESSURE A YOUNG ATHLETE FEELS TO BECOME BIGGER, FASTER, AND STRONGER.

why dont you make a sequel of gym candy in drews point of view?
GOOD IDEA; I MAY DO THAT SOME DAY.

what was your purpose of writing Gym Candy? TO ENTERTAIN, FIRST AND FOREMOST. HOPEFULLY THE STORY ALSO GIVES READERS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT--THE PRESSURE ATHLETES FEEL TO PRODUCE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL, AND THE LET-DOWN THEY FEEL WHEN THEY "FAIL."

I just finished the book Gym Candy , and i was wondering what inspired you to write this book .? was there anything in your life that made you want to write this? Were you once considering steroids? NO, IT WASN'T ANYTHING PERSONAL. I READ THE SAD STORY OF AN 18 YEAR OLD BASEBALL PLAYER WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE. AFTER HIS DEATH, HIS PARENTS DISCOVERED HE'D BEEN ON STEROIDS. THAT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT THE STORY.

SEQUEL AT BOTTOM!

Theme of Runner? YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. NO PLEADING IGNORANCE, NO PRETENDING TO NOT UNDERSTAND--YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE.

Mr. Deuker, my name is Brady Harris. I am a 7th grader and I have just started reading your incredible books. Personally, my favorite is "Gym Candy". I was wondering if you were ever planning on writing a sequel of it. Please comment back. -Thanks! I MAY SOMEDAY, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M WORKING ON NEW PROJECTS. I LIKE TO KEEP FRESH.

By the way...Ironically my boyfriend's name is dylan and his mom named him after after Bob Dylan. I got a kick out of that when I read it on the side bar that you listened to Bob in the back of the classroom.

Hello Dr. Deuker,

My boyfriend is a huge fan of "Runner". It is actually THE only book he reads for fun and he reads it over and over again. It really means alot to him and he can relate to the main character in the book. Now, for christmas all he asked for was a copy of "Runner" which I have already gotten him....but I would love to make this gift so special. I am sure that you are a very busy man, but is there any way that you can write him a letter? He has had THE hardest time right now with trying to figure out a future and supporting me and his mom and broher. (His dad passed away a few ears ago.)And I know it would make his entire life just to know that you took the time to write to him.
Please consider this and I hope to hear from you soon. (For some reason I can't pull up your email address which is why im writing in the comment box.) THANK YOU!
GLAD YOU FOUND MY EMAIL AND HOPE IT ARRIVES BY CHRISTMAS. HE'S A LUCKY GUY TO HAVE SUCH A NICE GIRLFRIEND.
are you going to have a seqeul to gym candy? MAYBE SOMEDAY.

has your book runner won any awards is so what are they
RUNNER HAS BEEN NOMINATED AS BOOK OF THE YEAR IN A FEW STATES. IT WAS ALSO NAMED AS ONE OF THE TEN BEST SPORTS BOOKS IN THE YEAR IT WAS PUBLISHED, WHICH I DON'T REMEMBER RIGHT NOW.
When do you think your next book will be coming out? What is it called? and what is this one about???
Thanks Please write back TITLE LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE "PAYBACK TIME" THIS ONE IS A FOOTBALL BOOK WITH A MYSTERY--PLAYER SHOWS UP WITH NO PAST WHO IS TOO GOOD TO HAVE NO PAST. SCHOOL NEWSPAPER REPORTERS INVESTIGATE. SURPRISE (I HOPE) ENDING

So what is really your favorite baseball team. The Giants or the Mariners? My favorite is the Braves. MY FAVORITE TEAM IS THE MARINERS. GIANTS ARE SECOND.

hi my teacher asked me to try and get information about you and your books, what is the theme and an accurate place in the book gym candy? THEME OF GYM CANDY: YOU PLAY OUTSIDE THE RULES AND YOU PAY A PRICE. PLACE: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

what is an important quote to you in the book gym candy? I DON'T HAVE THE BOOK IN FRONT OF ME, BUT THE LAST PARAGRAPH CONTAINS SOMETHING ABOUT HOW HE KNOWS WHAT TO DO IN THE DAYTIME AND IT SEEMS EASY, ETC. THAT'S A BIG PART OF THE BOOK FOR ME. IT'S ONE THING TO KNOW WHAT YOU SHOULD DO, BUT IT'S MUCH HARDER TO ACTUALLY DO IT. CHECK THE LAST PAGE AND YOU'LL FIND IT.

What is your favorite color? BLUE

what is the plot line for youre book runner YOU'LL HAVE TO READ IT TO FIND OUT! YOU'LL ENJOY IT, AND IT'S SHORT.

I'm a freshman and doing a book report over Carl Deuker and i need to know where he lives currently? and Is he still writing? my email is Matt_3_murray@hotmail.com please email info if you have it thanks YES, I'M STILL WRITING AND I LIVE IN SEATTLE

Has Carl Deuker ever gotten any awards? I HAVE WON SIX "BOOK OF THE YEAR" AWARDS. THREE TIMES IN NEBRASKA (MY FAVORITE STATE), ONCE EACH IN TENNESSEE, PENNSYLVANIA, AND SOUTH CAROLINA--ALL OF WHICH ARE TIED FOR SECOND PLACE ON MY FAVORITE STATE LIST.

what are important quotes from your book gym candy?
THAT'S NOT FOR ME TO SAY, THAT'S FOR THE READER TO SAY, BECAUSE IT IS PERSONAL AND CHANGES WITH EVERY READER. IF YOU'RE READING ALONG IN A BOOK, AND SUDDENLY YOU WANT TO REREAD A SENTENCE OR A PARAGRAPH, THEN YOU'VE COME ACROSS AN IMPORTANT QUOTE. IT MIGHT TAKE YOU A WHILE TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU, BUT KEEP AT IT AND IT WILL COME TO YOU.

You know what I think that you should do Mr. Deuker? I think that you should make a book on golf. I mean personally, I am not interested in golf, but if you made a book about golf I would read it. I think you can make anything sound interesting. Thank you for being such a great writer. And aslo, I think that it would be amazing if you could write a book about a kid in band...I am in band and there really isnt that many books at all about band. And personally I think you would make a KILLING off of it if you would think about all the band kids in the US alone. If you did decide to write that book...you could always email me for information.
Thank You, Brandon

P.S. My E-mail Adress is: mustangaddict@verizon.net
THOSE ARE BOTH VERY GOOD IDEAS. I LOVE GOLF, AND I'VE TOYED WITH THE IDEA OF WRITING ABOUT A GOLFER WHO CHEATS. THE BAND IDEA IS TOTALLY NEW TO ME, SO THANKS.

I have just read runner and finished Gym candy which one of your books would you reccommend next? NIGHT HOOPS OR PAINTING THE BLACK

what was the relationship between chance's dad and melissa's dad OLD SCHOOL FRIENDS WHOSE LIVES WENT IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

Gym Candy is almost the first favorite books that I ever read yet.Is there other sports book of yours. I HAVE SIX OTHER SPORTS BOOKS--JUST LOOK AT THIS WEBSITE FOR THE TITLES. THE ONLY NON-SPORT BOOK IS RUNNER

??????

My name is Brandon Lamproe i go to cedarville high school in cedarville, arkansas. i would like to ask if you would write a second part to gym candy. your books are the first books i have liked to read. please keep making awesome books. I am very anxious to read about what happends to him after rehab. thnanx. I'M WORKING ON ANOTHER BOOK RIGHT NOW, BUT GYM CANDY DOES SORT OF CALL OUT FOR A SEQUEL, SO MAYBE SOME DAY.

Hey i love your books

what is your religion? I'M SORT OF VAGUE ON RELIGION. I WAS RAISED A ROMAN CATHOLIC, BUT DON'T ATTEND CHURCH ANYMORE.

All I can say write faster!! These books are awesome. All of these should be movies. I only have one complaint, why havent you written a sequel im to attached to the characters for the book to end!!!
THAT'S AWFULLY KIND OF YOU TO SAY. IT JUST DOESN'T COME FAST TO ME.

CARL DEUKER (#1 SPORTS FICTION WRITER EVER)

First off i have read one of your books only one and that was Gym Candy. I quite frankly i don't like to read and i visit my school library about once every three months!!! I picked up this book thinking this is just one of those i hang on to but not really read. Turns out i was wrong i loved this book so much i couldn't put it down. You should really think about making a sequal. I have to read more of your books because of Gym candy. THanks for writing this awesome book. I might actually like reading from hear on out. THank You So much
THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS. MANY PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY DON'T LIKE TO READ JUST HAVEN'T FOUND THE RIGHT BOOK FOR THEM. I'M GLAD MY BOOK WAS THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU.

Will there be a part two to Gym Candy? MAYBE SOMEDAY.

What inspired you to write the book Night Hoops NIGHT HOOPS WAS LOOSELY BASED ON EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE IN MY OWN LIFE AND IN THE LIVES OF SOME OF MY STUDENTS.

who is sargent brent miller, how does he die and when? CHARACTER IN RUNNER--YOU'LL HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT.

is there going to be another book that goes with gym candy? MAYBE SOMEDAY, BUT I'M NOT WORKING ON A SEQUEL RIGHT NOW.

Carl, no offense but you are "mature" in age. Where do you get the inspiration for your books to keep the young readers attached to your books? Also, did you used to be In any sports as a child? Thanks! Alec Larson NO OFFENSE TAKEN! I WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AS A TEACHER, SO I'M AROUND THEM ALL THE TIME. I THINK THAT HELPS ME TREMENDOUSLY AS A WRITER OF YA BOOKS. I PLAYED BASKETBALL, BASEBALL, VOLLEYBALL, GOLF GROWING UP, WITH MANY A PARK FOOTBALL GAME THROWN IN AS WELL.

Where does the book mostly take place WHICH BOOK? MOST OF MINE, BUT NOT ALL, ARE SET IN SEATTLE.

Mr. Deuker, having read all of your novels several times, I just wondered and pardon me if you have already answered this before but which story would be dearest to you? Im guessing "On the Devils Court" Also, Im in the grueling process of writing a juvenile football novel. I have read much literature and researched as much as I can, but I'm just wondering if you would have any tips for a first time writer on what to do first when I have finished the book? If this is an inappropriate question I understand. WHEN YOU FINISH, LOOK UP AGENTS ON THE INTERNET OR GO TO A WRITER'S CONFERENCE THAT OFFERS A CHANCE TO MEET WITH AGENTS. ALSO, LOOK FOR SECTIONS OF YOUR BOOK THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SELL AS A SHORT STORY. LASTLY, START A NEW STORY OR BOOK RIGHT AWAY. YOU LEARN A LOT BY WRITING A BOOK, BUT IF YOU JUST SIT ON THAT ONE BOOK, YOU'LL LOSE YOUR MOMENTUM. AS TO MY FAVORITE BOOK--I NEVER EXPECTED TO GET ANYTHING PUBLISHED, SO THEY ARE ALL LITTLE MIRACLES TO ME.

Why are all of your books about teenage kids in high school??? I HAD SUCCESS WITH MY FIRST BOOK IN WHAT IS CALLED THE "YOUNG ADULT" GENRE, SO I'VE STUCK WITH IT.

Oh yea I forgot to tell you in your my last
Comment that I read Gym Candy and it was
amazing I just want to know what happens to
Mick after rehab but maybe that can become a
sequel please right back
From Derek R MAYBE SOMEDAY I WILL WRITE A SEQUEL. I'M FINISHING UP A FOOTBALL BOOK RIGHT NOW.

Hey Mr.Deuker I just wanted to know
how much longer till a new football book
comes out please write back
From Derek R
I THINK SIX MONTHS OR SO
MR.Deuker in your book GYN CANDY your insite of the feelings when you are in a game was amazing did you ever play, and if so waht position?
I WANTED TO BE A WIDE RECEIVER, BUT MY FOOTBALL PLAYING WAS LIMITED TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS. I WAS WAY TOO SKINNY IN HIGH SCHOOL TO PLAY.
i loved your book night hoops. are you ever going to make a movie for it? that would be incredible. hope you reply and read this one day...
thanks.I'D LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE OF NIGHT HOOPS, BUT THAT'S UP TO SOMEONE ELSE, NOT ME. WRITERS HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHETHER A FILM-MAKER IS INTERESTED IN A BOOK.
god bless.

Your books have revitalized reading in middle school aged boys. Thank you! I have book clubs in my Language Arts classes, some of the boys cry when they don’t get to read your books. I am trying to develop some discussion questions for Runner and especially Gym Candy, can you help me? sedaly@seattleschools.org
THIS IS ONE OF MY LONG-STANDING GOALS: TO PUT TOGETHER SOME SORT OF STUDY GUIDES FOR THE BOOKS FOR TEACHERS. HOPEFULLY I'LL ACTUALLY DO IT THIS SUMMER, AND NOT JUST TALK ABOUT DOING IT. THANKS FOR GETTING MY BOOKS INTO THE HANDS OF READERS.
Why is it that in the book Chance makes $200 but on your website under the summary of teh book it says he makes $250? THAT'S A MISTAKE. THANKS FOR ALERTING ME; I'LL CHANGE IT.

I have recently finished "Gym Candy". You end the epilogue on a negitive tone, with Mick comparing Drew and Judas and Mick contemplating getting new drugs. Is this to lead the reader to infer that he will start steroids again? And then he would commit suicide again, rendering the epilogue useless. Is the the intention? NO. WHAT I WANTED THE READER TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT REHAB ISN'T MAGIC. MICK CAN'T SPEND TWO WEEKS AT THE REHAB CENTER AND -- PRESTO -- BE CURED. HE'S STILL GOING TO BE TEMPTED, HE'S STILL GOING TO HAVE TO FIGHT TO STAY CLEAN.

Mr. Dueker, I was wondering if the protagonist of the book, Seth Barahm, was also the antagonist, sort of a person vs. self conflict. Also, is the theme of the book, "Don't let tragedy, stop you from doing what you love best."? I'D SAY THE THEME IS: SOMETIMES YOU DON'T GET A SECOND CHANCE. SOME MISTAKES CAN'T BE UNDONE. AS TO THE ANTAGONIST--PROBABLY THE LURE OF ALCOHOL, ALTHOUGH THAT'S NOT A PERSON.

Hello. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE all of your books! They are GREAT! I never enjoyed reading until i stumbled across "Gym Candy." Then I just had to read the rest of your books. I've read them all now in about a three-week time. But I was wondering of you were going to write another book? I'd love it, and I'm sure all of your other fans would, too. Anyway, you're a great writer, and your books are wonderful! MY NEW BOOK, NOW TITLE Payback, SHOULD BE OUT IN SIX MONTHS OR SO. THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS.

who is the bad guy in the runner? THE GUYS IN THE CAR AND ON THE BOAT AT THE END ARE BAD GUYS FOR SURE, AND SO IS THE FAT GUY ON THE MARINA.

What is the conflict in Hoops TEAMWORK CO-OPERATION VS. SELFISHNESS, ISOLATION

will there be a sequel to gym candy? MAYBE SOMEDAY

How many pages does Gym Candy have? 250

what is the theme to runner by carl duker NO ACTION EXISTS IN ISOLATION. WHEN A PERSON DOES SOMETHING, HE/SHE SETS IN MOTION OTHER ACTIONS. ACTING RESPONSIBLY IS CRUCIAL.

Hello Mr. Deuker.
I am a new teacher and hope to teach the novel Runner right after Christmas break. I am interested in obtaining a novel unit and/or lesson plans and activities related to the book. Having found nothing on line, I was wondering if you could point me in a different direction? Thank you.
Sincerely,
kvbierman@prairieinet.net I SENT AN EMAIL OFF TO YOU.

I am doing a report on you...and i need some sites or books on you. That would be great. NOT NEARLY FAMOUS OR IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO HAVE ANY BOOKS WRITTEN ABOUT ME. YOU'LL FIND SOME THINGS IF YOU SEARCH USING GOOGLE.

Sorry, I meant to type Payback not Paycheck. THE TITLE IS STILL BEING HASHED OUT, BUT I'M 99.9 CERTAIN THAT THE WORD PAYBACK WILL BE IN IT.

Mr Deuker, towards the middle of the page I noticed that someone posted the following comment: "Mr Deuker you should consider makeing another Thriller /Mystery novel. Runner had taken me in and kept me on reading. Also if you would like to make a conituation of Runner i would love to read on what happened to Chance and Mellisa." and you replied " I HAVE JUST FINISHED ANOTHER MYSTERY THRILLER TYPE, SO WISH ME LUCK WITH GETTING IT PUBLISHED. I REALLY ENJOYED WRITING IT!". I was just wondering if that was the book that you mentioned to Brandon called Paycheck. If not could you tell me the title. Thanks YES, PAYBACK, A MYSTERY-THRILLER FOOTBALL BOOK. I'M DOING THE FINAL EDIT THIS WEEKEND.

What are three reasons to Why Heart Of Champion banned? I DON'T THINK THERE ARE ANY REASONS WHY HEART OF A CHAMPION SHOULD BE BANNED!

Sorry for once again bothering you, I just thought I would return the favor and reccomend the book Deadline by Chris Crutcher to you. This book reminded me of you somewhat. So I figured I would recomend it. Sorry again, Brandon THANKS, BRANDON. CHRIS CRUTCHER IS AN EXCELLENT WRITER AND IT IS A COMPLIMENT TO BE MENTIONED AS SIMILAR TO HIM. I WILL READ IT.

when was the copyright on this book
I DON'T KNOW WHICH BOOK YOU MEAN?

hi carl my class is going 2 read ur book night hoops. it seems like a good book. but why did u write it. answer at this email atomant96@yahoo.com

I'LL ANSWER RIGHT HERE. I WANTED TO WRITE A STORY ABOUT A TROUBLED KID WHO ENDS UP MAKING A SMART DECISION. I ALSO WANTED TO WRITE A BASKETBALL BOOK.

will heart of a champion ever be made into a movie?
I DON'T KNOW. I HOPE SO.

Mr. Deuker,
I got two questions, first off, Are you going to come out with any new books anytime soon? I absolutely love your books. They are not neccesarily about sports that is what I like but they contain just the right amount of sports in it. Any way, second, I would like to ask you if you would reccomend any authors to me. I figured since I read all your books and yours were amazing I thought you would have some insight about authors kind of like you. Just wondering. Thank you. Brandon GLAD YOU LIKE MY BOOKS, BRANDON. YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT--MY BOOKS, I HOPE, AREN'T STRICTLY SPORTS BOOKS BUT ARE ABOUT MUCH MORE. I LIKE FEED BY M.T. ANDERSON QUITE A BIT, AND I ALSO LIKE THE BOOKS OF RANDY POWELL. I FINISHED A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE OUT WITHIN THE YEAR. I THINK THE TITLE WILL BE: PAYBACK.

What evidence in the novel Painting the Black proves that ryan ward pushes himself to the limits? what did he do to push himself? THIS SOUNDS A WHOLE LOT LIKE A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT QUESTION.

You are my favorite author. Keep writing. THANKS, I'LL KEEP TRYING
Gym Candy is amazing!
-Ben Lin, San Jose.

what was chance's dad in the book Runner? HE WAS A VET, AN ALCOHOLIC, AND A DECENT PERSON.

Hi Carl,
Can you tell me what year your novel: On the Devil's Court, took place? I WROTE IT IN THE 1980'S, SO I GUESS THAT'S ABOUT THE TIME. I THINK I MENTION U-2 IN THE BOOK. THEY WERE JUST GETTING STARTED.

mr deuker i am 13 years old and im in the 8th grade i just finished reading gym candy and i realy loved the book it was very interesting and shocking and i was wondering if you could make a series out of gym candy or atleast a 2nd book that tells us what happens when he gets out of rehab and stuff plz my name is zach winters HELLO ZACK. SOMEDAY I MIGHT WRITE A SEQUEL. RIGHT NOW I HAVE SOME NEW IDEAS THAT I'M PURSUING. I LIKE TO KEEP FRESH.

what is the mood of heart of a champion MELANCHOLY

Dear Mr. DEUKER I read the book high heat. It was outstanding. As a pitcher i could relate very well. I was hoping you would make a sequel. I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT FOLLOWING HIM TO PORTLAND U. IT WOULD GIVE ME AN EXCUSE TO GO SEE A BUNCH OF COLLEGE BASEBALL GAMES.

your books are so amazing!!! I just finnished Gym Candy and i was wondering if you will make a sequal
SOMEDAY I MIGHT WRITE A SEQUEL. RIGHT NOW I HAVE SOME NEW IDEAS THAT I'M PURSUING. I LIKE TO KEEP FRESH.

MY GUESS IS THAT HE COMES BACK THE NEXT YEAR AND TRIES TO PLAY CLEAN AND FAIR, BUT THAT HE'S TEMPTED TO CHEAT EVERY TIME THINGS GO BAD.

how many pages is on the devils court AROUND 250

Who is the main character in the book Heart of a Champion Seth or Jimmy I'D SAY SETH. HE'S THE ONE WHO GROWS AND CHANGES THE MOST.

I'm doing a report on your book runner and i was wondering what motivated you to write this novel? AFTER 9/11, WRITING STRICTLY SPORTS SEEMED SILLY. SO I PUT DOWN MY FOOTBALL BOOK AND WROTE A STORY IN WHICH A BASICALLY GOOD KID GETS MIXED UP WITH SOME BAD PEOPLE IN THIS COMPLICATED WORLD OF OURS.

How do the main character of Gym Candy and the Main Character of The Secret Life Of Bee's are the same and how do they differ? I HAVEN'T READ THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES.

hello Mr.Deuker i really like your book that i ben reading i just got it like a coulple weeks ago. GLAD TO HEAR IT.

Gym Candy is a crazy good book but i cant helpwonder what happens to mick and everyone else. Gym candy was the best all the way through. I JUST IMAGINED THE WHOLE THING TO THAT CLIMACTIC SCENE DOWN BY THE DUCK PONDS. AFTER THAT, I REALLY DON'T KNOW. MAYBE SOME DAY I'LL THINK IT ALL THROUGH AND WRITE A SEQUEL

any chance for a high heat 2? portland sequal sounds pretty good MAYBE, SOMEDAY IF I RUN OUT OF NEW IDEAS. RIGHT NOW I LIKE MOVING ON FROM A PROJECT TO AN ENTIRELY NEW ONE.
thnks, juan

Dear Mr. Deuker
First off i want to thank you for writing such great books they're really moving and I want to say that either Night Hoops or Heart of a Champion was my favorite. Also I was wondering if you were going to write more books? That would just be so great. But thx anyways for the great books you've already wrote. I KEEP TRYING. I'VE GOT ANOTHER BOOK WITH THE PUBLISHER--TITLE STILL NOT SET--THAT SHOULD COME OUT IN THE NEXT SIX TO NINE MONTHS.

what is the high school that Ryan Ward go to named?
I CAN'T REMEMBER EITHER.

Hello Mr.dueker I Am A You-tuber And I am Reading Your Book In School and I Was Wondering If I Can Reenact It.. It Would Be So Great Oh I Forgot Your Book Runner Thanks SURE, GO AHEAD.
Clay

Mr. Dueker I want to say thanks for writing such a good book. I'm a sr. in high school and as embarrassing as it sounds Gym Candy is the first book I've ever fully read. I am doing a project on it as I write you. But my question is why did your book end the way it did. I think you should have a sequel to it? because personally I didn't care for the ending because I liked the book so well I want to find out what happens after he gets out.

Thanks,
Colby
GLAD YOU LIKED THE BOOK, COLBY. ACTUALLY, YOU'VE PAID ME THE NICEST COMPLIMENT A WRITER COULD EVER GET.

how do u make ur own website
I DON'T. THIS ONE IS MANAGED BY THE AUTHOR'S GUILD. THEY HAVE THE TEMPLATES AND I JUST FILL IN THE SLOTS. I PAY THEM ABOUT $100 A YEAR.

Hey, Mr. Dueker I am actually doing a project on you. I am sorry for writing again. But I am not dong on you. Ok sorry
Thanks,
Jack
NO PROBLEM

Hey Mr. Dueker my name is Jack Chaffee. I am dong a project on you and one thing I have to have is what influenced you to write great books.
Thanks,
Jack

Baseball is definately passion in my life and Heart of Champion was a fine piece of literature. You may get approached by me to write a screenplay. I am an amateur writer and I admire you because you write literature you are passionate about and it shows in you work. So hopefully someday I can produce a screenplay for Heart of Champion. I think it would be a great Hallmark movie.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I THINK HALLMARK IS THE RIGHT SORT OF SPOT AS WELL. 90 MINUTES, LOW BUDGET. FILM RIGHTS ARE ACTUALLY HELD BY THE PUBLISHER, BUT DON'T LET THAT DISCOURAGE YOU. THEY WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO HAVE A MOVIE MADE.

Hello are you ever giong to think about making a movie for gym candy if you ever are could i know about it
WRITERS DON'T HAVE CONTROL OVER MOVIES. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF BOOKS PUBLISHED EVERY YEAR, BUT PROBABLY ONLY A COUPLE OF HUNDRED MOVIES.

I read High Heat for summer reading I just want you to summarise how shane became good at baseball agian.
SORRY, THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR ASSIGNMENT.

heyy what is a symbol from the novel runner?
I TRY TO AVOID "SYMBOLS" IN MY WRITING. I JUST WANT TO TELL THE STORY IN A CLEAN, STRAIGHT-FORWARD WAY

What in your own words is a good description of Joe Faust (his personality)? CONFUSED, BUT BASICALLY A GOOD GUY, WHO IS TRYING TO FIND HIS OWN WAY IN LIFE.

what chapter does Reese come into the book I HONESTLY DON'T REMEMBER, BUT YOU CAN LOOK IT UP.

What is a good Quote to show an example of Joe and his father fighting in the book On the Devils Court? LOOK AT THE SECTION IN WHICH THEY FIRST DISCUSS JOE GOING TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL. HIS FATHER IS PRETTY SARCASTIC THERE.

Hey Mr.Deuker,
I really loved your book, i had it for summer reading, for the first time i enjoyed summer reading.Once i started reading i couldn't stop. Thank you for writing such an awesome book. :) GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT.

describe the settings of this novel. how are the settings important to the action? YOU'D HAVE TO TELL ME WHICH NOVEL--BUT, HONESTLY, THIS SOUNDS LIKE A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT. I'M DONE WITH SCHOOL; I DON'T HAVE TO DO ASSIGNMENTS LIKE THOSE ANYMORE, I GET TO WRITE STORIES INSTEAD.

HI! what is the climax and the resolution for the book HIGH HEAT? thanks EVERY READER HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION ON THAT. YOU'LL HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.

Hello Mr. Deuker. My name is Steven
I was wondering if you could tell me the theme of Night Hoops in your opinion. In mine i think it is... Don't judge people because of the way their family acts. THAT SOUNDS GREAT TO ME.

In your opinion what is the theme of the novel "Night hoops" and also what are five adjectives each to describe Nick Abbott and Trent Dawson. AGAIN, THIS SOUNDS LIKE A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT. SORRY, BUT YOU NEED TO DO THOSE ON YOUR OWN.

hi im mark from philly and i wanted to know what the main idea of chapter 2 in the book hoops is SEE ABOVE

What is a good summary of the book Gym Candy SEE ABOVE

What is a good Summary of the book SEE ABOVE

how many pages is this novel WHICH NOVEL?

Hi, What would be a possible theme, or main central idea for Gym Candy? SEE ABOVE

hello mr. deuker. i am trent knutson.
i was wondering if it is possible to put the heart of a champion online so i can read it.
i checked all the librarys around me and i cant seem ti find it. will you please do this.
this book is my all time favorite book!!!!!!!!!!
HELLO TRENT
SORRY, THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE. TWO REASONS. FIRST, I WROTE HEART OF A CHAMPION ON A TYPEWRITER SO I DON'T HAVE IT IN A DOWNLOADABLE FORM. SECOND, PUBLISHERS HAVE STRICT RULES ABOUT POSTING WRITING ON-LINE. HARD TO BLAME THEM. HOW WOULD THEY (OR I) MAKE ANY MONEY IF ALL THE BOOKS WERE AVAILABLE FOR FREE?

what are four qoutes from runner? THAT'S FOR THE READER TO SAY, NOT THE AUTHOR. YOU NEED TO FIND FOUR SENTENCES IN THE BOOK THAT YOU THINK SAY SOMETHING IMPORTANT.

what is a unique quality of your writing in the book night hoops I TRY TO BE AN 'INVISIBLE' WRITER. THAT IS, I TRY TO WRITE SO THAT YOU NEVER ONCE THINK ABOUT THE AUTHOR, ONLY THE STORY. THAT'S WHY, I THINK, PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE COMING UP WITH MEANINGFUL QUOTATIONS FROM MY BOOKS.

Which book comes after gym candy
I'M WORKING ON A BOOK RIGHT NOW ENTITLED "CHASING ANGEL" OR PERHAPS "FOURTH AND FOREVER." THE BOOK IS WITH THE PUBLISHER. HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE PUBLISHED WITHIN A YEAR.

Hi, my name is Ed and i think your book "Heart of A Champion" was the best book i have ever read, i even got my mom, dad, friends, and a couple of teachers to read it, and love it.
My principal even made it a summer reading book for the 9th grade.I was just wondering if you were going to write anything like it again, even for another sport, i just loved the storyline too much to leave it behind me, kind of like Seth with Jimmy's and Mr.Barham's death. Please answer

WILL DO. THANKS FOR THE NICE PRAISE.

~edtorres123@Gmail.com

Hi Mr. Deuker

What are 2 good quotes in the book Runner. I'VE BEEN ASKED THIS BEFORE. THE ONLY ANSWER IS THAT THOSE WOULD BE FOR YOU TO FIND. I DON'T THINK MANY WRITERS THINK--THIS WILL BE A GOOD QUOTE--AS THEY WRITE. THEY SIMPLY WRITE, AND IF OTHERS THINK SOMETHING MAKES A GOOD QUOTE, THEN -- THERE IT IS.

why do u call it runner? SIMPLE TITLE, EASY TO REMEMBER, AND CHANCE RUNS LITERALLY, AND HE ALSO RUNS SYMBOLICALLY--AWAY FROM RESPONSIBILITY.

Hey Mr dueker,
i love your books i've read Heart of a champion that was my favorite runner which i sort of didn't get but i want to read more of your books give me some suggestions so i can read them over summer. Email at mclaughlindavid61@yahoo.com

What are three good coments from the book runner.. by the way that book was the best book i have ever read their should deffinatley be a sequal
I GET THIS QUESTION OFTEN. REALLY, THE THREE GOOD COMMENTS ARE ENTIRELY YOUR CHOICE, NOT MINE. WERE THERE ANY PARTICULAR SCENES OR SENTENCES THAT STRUCK YOU? IF SO, THEN THOSE ARE THE COMMENTS THAT MATTERED TO YOU. AND YOUR OPINION COUNTS!

Dear Carl I like your book runner I read it over & over

1 question. Who inspired you to write your books?
MUSIC MAINLY GOT ME GOING. I LIKED THE LYRICS OF THE ROLLING STONES, BOB DYLAN, THE BEATLES, AND I STARTED WRITING SONGS AND SORT OF STUCK WITH WRITING.

Mr Deuker you should consider makeing another Thriller /Mystery novel. Runner had taken me in and kept me on reading. Also if you would like to make a conituation of Runner i would love to read on what happened to Chance and Mellisa I HAVE JUST FINISHED ANOTHER MYSTERY THRILLER TYPE, SO WISH ME LUCK WITH GETTING IT PUBLISHED. I REALLY ENJOYED WRITING IT!

Hey Carl.

Just wanted to let you know that Gym Candy was reviewed recently over at WORD for Teens (http://wordforteens.blogspot.com) and earned a solid 8/10.

~Nicole
THANK YOU. GLAD TO HEAR IT.
what is the theme of On the Devil's Court?
ACHIEVE THINGS IN AN HONEST AND FAIR MANNER AND YOU WON'T SPEND YOUR LIFE LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER FEELING GUILTY.

Whats a good quotation of the main idea from the book? I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT?

did you win any award with on the devil's court I'M from England thanks for your attention
IT WAS NOMINATED AS BOOK OF THE YEAR IN MANY STATES AND WON IN SOUTH CAROLINA. IT ALSO MADE A LIST PUT OUT BY THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AS ONE OF THE BEST 100 BOOKS OF THE DECADE. GLAD YOU LIKED IT.

Hey Mr. Deuker, I loved your book RUNNER and think it's an extremely inspirational read! The emotions going into Chance's mind amazed me and I felt connected to the book the entire way. I wanted to ask you why it is that Chance left to the military in the end. It seems as though he was given the perfect chance to correct the mistakes his tragic life had given him, yet instead he chose to go along and apply to the military. I loved the book RUNNER and am HOPING that you will create a sequel. I think from this book you have already become by far my favorite author. I also wanted to know whether you based your book a little on some of the ideals of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, because I realized Chance was disagreeing with many aspects of society that kids his age would otherwise agree to. Such as the fact that he could not stand rich people, who had "their hundred-dollar running shoes, their fifty-dollar running shorts, their bottles of Gatorade, and their energy bars." Both ways, I found your novel extremely inspirational, and emotional. Thanks and please create more great reads like this one!! I READ CATCHER IN THE RYE MANY YEARS AGO AND LOVED IT. I THINK ALL WRITERS OF YOUNG ADULT FICTION OWE A HUGE DEBT TO THAT BOOK--IT REALLY WAS THE FIRST BOOK OF ITS KIND. I'M FLATTERED TO BE MENTIONED IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH.

Hi i like your books GREAT.

your book on the devil's court was my favorite book of all time
GLAD TO HEAR IT. THAT WAS MY FIRST BOOK, SO IT WILL ALWAYS BE SPECIAL FOR ME.

who was YOur inspiration I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOK YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT--BUT FOR ALL BOOKS IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. SOME THINGS COME FROM MY OWN LIFE; SOME THINGS COME FROM MY READING; AND SOME THINGS I INVENT.

are you going to make another part to gym candy? it was really good but it doesnt explain what went on after he got out of rehab an i had many questions about what happened. SOMEDAY I MIGHT MAKE A SEQUEL, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M WORKING ON A NEW PROJECT. ONCE I FINISH WITH A STORY, I LIKE TO MOVE ON TO SOMETHING NEW. THE BOOK DESCRIBES ONE PHASE OF MICK'S LIFE, NOT HIS WHOLE LIFE.

gym candy was a great book.

GLAD YOU LIKED IT.

Hey, i am a currently in highschool and my english class is doing book reports, i found your book at the bottem of the pile and picked it up, Paintin the black. I love that book, i think you should make a follow up of Ryan, and the route he takes after school, making the college team, maybe get picked up by scouts, picked up by the same team as josh?? can you email me back if you decide your going to make painting the back sequel, i would buy it, Robin_dawe@live.ca Thanks in advance.

HOW ABOUT IT I JUST ANSWER YOU RIGHT HERE. I HAVEN'T DONE A SEQUEL YET, BUT I MAY IF THE MOOD STRIKES ME. I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK--IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TWO OF THEM

hey my name is Simone Livingston and I am doing a report on you and your book. I am reading Runner and I was wondering where you got your ideas from and if anyone had inspired you to write Runner RUNNER WAS INSPIRED BY THE ARREST OF A TERRORIST IN PORT TOWNSEND WASHINGTON JUST BEFORE THE NEW YEAR IN 2000. HE HAD EXPLOSIVES IN THE TRUNK OF HIS CAR AND WAS TRYING TO SMUGGLE THEM INTO THE USA FROM CANADA.

I think the book "Gym Candy" was the best book ive ever read by far. I thought the book reminded me a lot of myself. How he was a very serious football player like me and is underclassman but he wants to be the main man in the back field.I am a freshman going to be a sophmore and am working out as hard as i can to be the main man in the back field. And of course since im getting soo strong and fast people always say "are you on steriods" and of course it has always passed my mind of taking it, but i know its not the right thing to do. Anyway i loved your book and i think you should have someone make a movie out of this. its amazing. KEEP WORKING HARD AND GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN!!!!

is the book called night hoops AR

What was the climax of your book Heart of a Champion

Hi, my name is Josh P. from Liverpool Middle School. I was required to pick an author for a report. What I would like to do is ask you questions about your books. What was your favorite book you ever written.

My name is matt ans i have recently read "Heart of a champion." im a 7th grader and a sports fanatic and you did a great job with the book. However i was so ashamed when reading tgat Jimmy Winter died. I really wanted to see him make it to the big leauges and have Seth be luke an announcer for his team or something. If you get the time, please contact me at Mkeny023@aim.com with your response to why you chose to have Jimmy due and finish the book the way you did. Still great book though. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Matt WILL DO.

i am doing your biography and would like to talk to you, what do you mean when you say that alone is diff. from lonely. PEOPLE CAN BE ALONE AND BE PERFECTLY HAPPY. WHEN I WRITE, FOR EXAMPLE, I'M ALONE AND CONTENT. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES WHEN PEOPLE ARE ALONE THEY FEEL THE ABSENCE OF OTHER PEOPLE. THAT'S LONELY.

Where can you find gym candy? Is it out yet? GYM CANDY IS OUT IN PAPERBACK AND HARDBOUND. I HAVE LINKS ON THIS WEBSITE TO BOTH AMAZON.COM & BARNES & NOBLE, BOTH OF WHICH SELL THE BOOK. BUT YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE, EVEN THOUGH THEY MIGHT NOT CARRY IT, COULD ORDER IT FOR YOU AS WELL. SUPPORTING LOCAL BOOKSTORES IS A GOOD IDEA--OR THERE WON'T BE ANY PRETTY SOON.

do have any special quotes? THAT'S NOT FOR THE AUTHOR TO SAY, THAT'S FOR THE READER TO SAY. IF SOMETHING IN A BOOK REALLY SPEAKS TO YOU, THEN IT'S A SPECIAL QUOTE.

in heart of a champion what is the setting? i read the book but i dont have it, so i dont know at the moment. HEART OF A CHAMPION IS SET IN SAN MATEO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA DURING THE 1970'S.

Is there going to be a sequel to Gym Candy

MAYBE SOMEDAY, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M WORKING ON A SPORTS-THRILLER-MYSTERY.

I am making a powerpoint on you. I would like to know your opinions on Gym Candy and Night Hoops. WELL, I LIKE THEM BOTH A LOT! SERIOUSLY, THOUGH, I'D SAY THAT NIGHT HOOPS IS A MORE UPBEAT BOOK. AT THE END, TRENT HAS RETURNED TO THE TEAM AND THERE IS A STRONG SENSE THAT HE WILL RETURN TO A COMMUNITY AND GET HIMSELF TOGETHER. MICK, AT THE END OF GYM CANDY, IS LYING ALONE IN THE REHAB CENTER . . . AND HE'S ALREADY THINKING ABOUT USING STEROIDS AGAIN. MUCH MORE GRIM.

Hello, my name is Courtney H. and I am doing a report over you and one of the requirements are to contact you. I would love to hear back from you. Thanks THANKS FOR DOING YOUR REPORT ON ME. IT IS VERY FLATTERING. I HOPE YOU GET A HIGH GRADE!

whats your nationality? I'M AN AMERICAN. OKAY, I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. I'M HALF GERMAN AND HALF IRISH. BUT I'LL CONFESS I DON'T MUCH LIKE ALL THE VARIOUS CELEBRATIONS OF ETHNICITY. MY FEELING IS THAT WE'RE ALL IN AMERICA SO LET'S JUST ALL BE AMERICANS. I DON'T WANT TO BE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THE ENGLISH DID TO THE IRISH 600 YEARS AGO.

Dear Mr. Carl Deuker, I finished reading your novel "Gym Candy" today and decided to check out this site for more books by you because i loved the book. My favorite sport is football, and nothing has described and brought alive football as realistic as your character Mick Johnson portrays it. Ive played under the stadium lights, and i go through the workouts every day after school, all for football. I was surprised at how well you knew every detail and described it so eloquently. I haven't wanted to read a book for a long time, but this book has gotten me to start wanting to read again. in English class you perfectly do what my teachers say to do when they say to make a picture in the readers head. I noticed that most of your other novels are about baseball, and i was hoping that maybe you would maybe consider writing another book about football, if you ever get the inspiration. any thoughts on this? ACTUALLY, THE BOOK I'M FINISHING UP RIGHT NOW IS ALSO A FOOTBALL BOOK, SO YOU AND I ARE THINKING ALIKE. I ENJOYED WRITING GYM CANDY AND I HAD A LITTLE MORE FOOTBALL I WANTED TO GET OUT BEFORE GOING BACK TO BASKETBALL.

March 24, 2009 Dear Mr. Carl Deuker, My name is Christopher and I am currently a sophomore at East Leyden High School in Illinois. I have just finished reading your wonderful novel Night Hoops. My friend recommended me this book and I decided to try it out because I haven’t read any of your books yet. I just had some quick comments and questions about the book and was wondering if you had some time on your hands to get back to me. First of all this was a very good book usually I really do not find a book that is fun to read. I just had some things on my mind. The main character Nick Abbott seems to be a little neglected in the beginning of the book as if he was in his brother’s shadow all of his life did you do this on purpose or just to add to the story? I DEFINITELY DID IT ON PURPOSE, AND I HOPE IT DID ADD TO THE STORY. STORIES, FINALLY, ARE ALL BUILT ON UNHAPPINESS OF SOME SORT OF ANOTHER.
Another question I had was about Trent Dawson I enjoyed his development throughout the novel and his growing maturity but I wonder why did he come back to finish that last game did he need closure or did the help from Trent and Steve Clay make him see a new light? I WANTED TO IMPLY THAT HE HAD DECIDED TO REJOIN THE TEAM AND REBUILD HIS LIFE AWAY FROM HIS BROTHER. From the novel I could infer that Trent’s life has been rough but why has his mother not been more supportive was her childhood and or life in general rough as well?
ALMOST ALWAYS THAT'S THE CASE--THAT'S WHY IT IS SO HARD TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF MISERABLE PARENTS HAVE MISERABLE KIDS WHO BECOME MISERABLE PARENTS.
Also did Nich’s parents have some underlying problems that made them get separated or was it just Abbott’s dad being selfish and pushing his sons too hard? MAINLY IT WAS THE WAY THE DAD ACTED. TOO PUSHY, TOO SURE THAT WHAT HE WANTED FOR HIS CHILDREN WAS RIGHT. THERE'S ALSO A HINT EARLY ON THAT DAD HAS A GIRLFRIEND.
That pretty much covers my questions I had but I also have some other comments. I really enjoyed the

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Runner has been translated into Portugese and is available in Brazil.

ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE SEQUELS TO ANY OF YOUR BOOKS?

Probably not. I appreciate the fact that readers ask for sequels. It's a great compliment. But I've found that most sequels aren't as good as the original, and I've also found that reading a bad sequel somehow spoils the first book. So unless a really strong idea comes to me, I'm going to shy away from sequels.

The Greatest!

When did you start writing?

When I was in high school, a friend and I would sit in the back of English class and write poems and songs in the style of Bob Dylan. We'd pass these back and forth to one another, careful to avoid the eye of our teacher. No writing in English class back then! It was the lyrics of Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Leonard Cohen that got me going with words.

Where do you get ideas?

The plot for On the Devil's Court came from Dr. Faustus, which is mentioned in the book. Heart of a Champion comes from events in my own life, as does Painting the Black. With Night Hoops, I took a sad event in my life -- I had a student involved in a fatal shooting on the Burke Gilman trail -- and made a sad story in real life come out better in fiction. High Heat--I was beaned when I was in 8th grade. I was never the player that Reese was, but after being knocked unconscious I was no player at all. Runner came to life after the events of 9/11. The horrors of terrorism were on my mind; I wanted to write about it somehow but didn't know much, so I came up with a plot that involves terrorism through disengagement. Gym Candy is about steroids and sports: the idea came straight from the headlines.
